Put A Drink On It!

Drinks H2O

Drinks inside H2O (2)

According to our Hostess, Frances Byrne, it’s Beer Drinking Day!  The challenge this week is to put some kind of a drink on your card.  I made this card for my best friend, Jeanine, who is also my boss at the beauty salon I’ve worked at for the last 16yrs.  Our birthdays are 2 days apart!  She is 10yrs. younger than me however!  I just love her and we often spend our lunch hour picking up fast food and spending the hour chatting and laughing.

The Steps:

Step 1:  I made the pop up inside the card first.  I used an older die set from Karen Burniston called 780 – Garden Bench.  I like to try to use currently available products but this bench worked so well with the Art Impression’s stamp of these two ladies.  4407 – Coffee BFF’s

Step 2:  The card is a 6″x6″ square. I cut two 5.75″ x 5.75″ squares from white cardstock.  I stamped one with the tree from this stamp set I bought from:Amazon link to stamp set

Tree stamp

I have purchased several sets from this seller on Amazon.  They all have not disappointed me.  The seller is GIMITSUI.  They don’t spend on fancy packaging and the buyer benefits.  This set is priced at $6.59  They are a Prime Member store and offer free shipping and free returns!  What!  I know!  You will not want to return them.  All of the stamp sets I have purchased from them stamp very well.  Here are two more sets that I adore and have already used.

You may remember the elephant set used on another C4C Sketch Challenge:

Aug sketch Elephant H2O (2)

Then I used PanPastels to stencil the clouds and hills behind the bench.  The other 6″ square I also used PanPastels and stencils for the grass and path: Snow storm and Clouds & Mountain and Split rail Fence

Drinks inside H2O (2)

Next I trimmed them to fit behind and around the bench.  Wait to adhere these two stenciled squares until later.

Step 3: I stamped the Art Impression BFF’s stamp.  I colored them with Copic Markers and fussy cut them out.  I glued them to the front of the bench just on the back side of their legs which makes them really look like they’re sitting on that bench!  I’ve had the AI stamp for awhile and have used them a lot.  But I really believe I saw Frances use this stamp exactly like this when the Garden Bench first came out.

Step 4: Cut two 6″ squares from a sky blue cardstock for the front and back of the pop up.  Now take a scrap of white cardstock that is about 2″ x 4″ and stencil this strip to continue the hills behind the bench.  Do the same thing for under the bench.   Adhere the strip that is for behind the bench to the bottom of a blue square. (Make sure it is positioned to fill in where the bench cut out is).  Do the same thing for the piece that is attached to the path/grass layer and adhere it to what will be the back of the card.

Step 5:  I used 3 die sets for the front of the card: 1434 Calligraphic Elements – 3

1161 – happy birthday  and Coffee Charms.  I cut the “Elements” from silver mirror cardstock.  I cut coffee cup with white cardstock and colored with Copic Markers.  I cut the top from Velum. The happy birthday is from dark blue cardstock.  Adhere them all to the front of the card as shown:

Adhere the other blue square to the back of the card and it’s done!  I can’t wait to see what you make this week!

National Sandcastle Day

Front seaside H2O

Inside seaside H2O

It’s a new month and a new Hostess who is Nicky Foden.  Because today is Sandcastle Day, Nicky has challenged us to put a sandcastle, sand or any beach theme.  One of my favorite die sets is Karen Burniston’s Adirondack Chair Pop Up.  The one I own is one she designed when she was with Elizabeth Craft Designs.   She has revisited this set at her new site:  https://karenburniston.com/adirondack-chair-pop-up/

The Steps:

Step 1:  Karen has an assembly video for this die set.  Click on the link above and you will find two videos.  One is for the original look of the Adirondack and a second one to make the chair look upholstered!  So the first thing I do for a pop up card, is to master the pop mechanism.  No worries, this one is easy!  I cut the “chair” pop up from white base weight cardstock or 80lb.  I use a heavy cardstock because I assume it’s going to be opened a closed a lot!

Step 2:  My base card is a 5.75″ square when folded.  This is the card that you will cut the chair into the fold.  Depending on what you will use for inside mats you may want to cut the two mats with the chair.  I chose for the bottom (under the chair” side) I measured  where I needed to out sort of a square under the chair.  And then to cover that hole when I attached the “sand” mat, I just adhered the same color cardstock under the chair and adhered the larger mat on top.  Both the “sky” layer or as I’m calling mats, measure 5.5″ square.

Step 3:  Cut two 5.5″ squares from white cardstock.  Using Elizabeth Craft Designs: “Earth and Sky”   I stenciled clouds with Aqua Marine Blue PanPastel.  Adhere this sky background mat to the top inside of the base card. The second one you will use on the front of the card.

Step 4:  Using Karen Burniston’s1038 – Tropical Scene

Tropical Scene

I cut the “waves” in white and blue for both the bottom inside and the front of the card.  I also cut the “Palm tree/sand dunes and “sea shells” and “sun” from this same set above.  I cut the little sand mound pc. twice. Once with the light brown cardstock and once with white cardstock.  I colored the little palm trees with Copic Markers.  Then I cut them off and adhered them to the light brown one right over the light brown trees.

Note:  This is a personal endorsement.  I do not receive any income from this company in either currency or products.  I have always felt that Karen almost always,  includes little decorator dies that you can use for so many projects with or without the die set they come with.  I’ve used these little sea shells and sun a lot.  For this project I used them on the front, inside, and in the bucket on the inside.

Step 5:  The two “Palm Trees” and “Pail” on the inside is from a discontinued die set from Karen B. that is called:  Palm Tree & Pail”.  I love this palm tree.

Palm Tree and Pail

Step 6:  Now just adhere all your cut and/or colored as shown on the inside and the front.  (I also created a personal sentiment on my computer and printed out on white cardstock.  I cut it out with a nested die set set and adhered it to the bottom of the inside of the card centered on the lower inside over the “wave section”.  I took the pictures before I added it to the card because it has the “receiver’s name on it.”  I don’t have her permission to post it on the internet.  Here’s another quick look:

For April Fools Day!

The Opened card.

Because April Fools Day is right around the corner,  Francis Byrne, this month’s hostess gave us the challenge to make a card with some kind of trick like a pop up!  I love pop ups so that’s what I made.

The Steps:

I started by printing out the “Stacked Tea Cups” (not the name) from a digital stamp.  I’ve had this in my computer for a long time and don’t remember whose it is.  I think it is from CraftsUPrint.  If I’m wrong and someone recognizes it, I would love to be corrected.  I then colored the image with Copic Markers.  I cut the colored image out with Elizabeth Craft Designs:1175 – Dotted Scallop Squares

2017-07-23 16.40.52

I cut a tan mat using Elizabeth Craft Designs: 1118 – Stitched Squares2017-07-23 16.40.23

I cut a brown sort of linen print mat with the same die set above.

Step 2:  Using a now discontinued Karen Burniston’s  103 – Cup Pop Stand – 6 die set.  I looked over at YouTube to see if the assembly video is still available just in case you could find this die set on EBay., but it has also been taken down.

Step 3:  Make a base card by scoring an 8.5″ x 11″ pc. of card stock at 5.5″ on 11″ side.  Trim to a 5.5″ square tent fold base card. This is when you start the Pop Up die cutting process.  If you have this die set from Karen, then you know how to die cut what will become the “Cup Pop up” inside the card.

Step 4:  I added two more teacups to imitate the front of the card.  I used Elizabeth Craft Designs 1072 – Small Butterfly: https://www.elizabethcraftdesigns.com/products/small-butterfly-1072

Small Butterfly

For the inside sentiment,  I used Elizabeth Craft Designs 1161 – Happy Birthday 2 and 1154 – Calligraphic Elements 1 https://www.elizabethcraftdesigns.com/collections/dies

A Way With Words, Calligraphic Elements 1 A Way With Words, Happy Birthday 2

The leaves inside are from Elizabeth Craft Designs 1487 – Garden Notes – Lilac 2:  https://www.elizabethcraftdesigns.com/products/garden-notes-lilac-2

Garden Notes - Lilac 2

The lower picture shows that both sides of the stacked cups are the right side of the designer card stock.  You can make this happen by cutting the cup once with the die taped to the right side of the card stock and cut a second cup with the same card stock but tape the die to the wrong side of the card stock.  Then you adhere them together which makes “no wrong side” cups!

Step 5:  Adhere the stamped image layer to the tan mat and then to the darker brown one.  Cut a 5.5″ x 5.5″ square of the same card stock used for the base card.  Adhere the image stack to this square and adhere to the front of the Pop UP card.  Also used Brown Pan Pastel and sponged on the edges of the insided yellow card stock to give it sort of an antique look like the front.  Add another  5.5″ square to the other side of the pop up for the back of the card.  This step covers up both Pop up holes.  Here’s another look:

The first challenge of 2019!

The first challenge over at Crazy 4 Challenges is an easy one:  “What’s you favorite type of card to make?  Make one!  My favorite is some kind of an interactive or pop-up card.  My granddaughter’s birthday is Jan. 5th so I made her a cake pop up birthday card.

The die set I used for this card is no longer available but it is 1102 – Cake Pop Up by Karen Burniston.  It’s one of my favorites for birthdays as well as weddings.

To make this card, the hardest part is to choose the designer paper and cardstock you want to use.  The rest is really what the die set does.  So because this die set is no longer available I am going to just give you a list of the other products used:

Elizabeth Craft Designs:  1161 – Happy Birthday, 1034 – Flourishes & Branches (also unavailable,  Clear double sided Adhesive 10mm. and  silver peel off lines

For this card I used Karen Burniston’s : 1047 – Upsy Daisy Pop Up

When you click on the product link above, there is also the assembly video.  You really need to watch the video before you attempt to assemble this die set.

I have been a fan of The Eyelet Outlet for about 5 or 6 yrs. now.  You have to check out this online store for the adorable holiday brads I used on the panels.  They have brads in almost any image you can imagine. Eyelet Outlet

I also used Elizabeth Craft Designs:1277 – Kitchen Tools

and 1276 –  Apron

and 1467 – Words 3 – Happy Holidays

One card, Two Heroes

This week’s challenge is to make a card for someone who is fighting cancer or has won their battle with it.  Last week at the salon, one of our 90 something year old customers, who is fighting several health issues, talked about her daughter and how devoted she is to being there for her.  The mother our salon customer, was a nurse in the Navy during the Korean War.  And now her daughter is the nurse for this American Hero Mom.

The Steps:

Step 1:  Choose the papers and cardstock you want to use.  I wanted a “chocolate” sweets theme.  I chose a brown and white polka dot paper from Elizabeth Craft Designs: ModaScrap Thinking About Grand Canyon

Thinking About - Grand Canyon

Step 2:  I recently received Karen Burniston’s: 1047 – Upsy Daisy Pop Up  and also her: 1050 – Sweet Treats Charms

Upsy Daisy die

                  Sweet treat Charms

I cut all the dies in the Sweet Treat Charms set from white cardstock and colored them with Copic Markers.  I cut off the little “hanging part” since I wasn’t using them to hang from anything.

Step 3:  Cut all the pieces in the Upsy Daisy Die set.  The best way to show you how to construct the “pop up” mechanism is to direct you to the designer, Karen Burniston’s assembly video which is on the product page: Product page with assembly video

I always recommend watching the designer’s assembly videos, if available or needed.  Besides eliminating a lot of frustration and complete and utter confusion, she shows all the cards made by her design team using this set.  WARNING!  You’ll want it!  As a matter of fact my design for this challenge is in no way an original design.  It was inspired by one you’ll see in this video!

Step 4:  My card measures 5.5 x 5.5″ so score an 11 x 8.5″ at 5.5″ pc. of white cardstock along the 11″ side and fold over for a top fold card.  Then I cut four mats using the brown polka dot designer paper that each measure 5.25 x 5.25″  I adhered two of these mats to the inside of the card and two to the outside.

Step 5:  After your base card is ready is when you install the “Pop UP Mechanism” in the set.  But again, you need to watch the video.  Then you will be assembling what you want to display on the squares that pop up when the card is open.  That’s pretty much all there is to it!  I decorated the front to match and be a preview to what’s inside. Here’s another look:

Thanks so much for spending the time to take a look!  I hope you’ll take the challenge and show us your take on this week’s theme.

C4C – A Birthday card with Numbers

I love interactive cards!

C4C numbers front logo

Everyone who knows me, knows I love interactive cards.  For this card I chose Karen Burniston’s 1042 – 1042 – Spinner Square Pop Up

 Spinner Square Pop-up

This die set is so versatile.  It can be used for almost any theme you want.  I always recommend that you watch Karen’s: Spinner Square Pop Up assembly video  It will really help you make the “spinner mechanism” work properly the very first time.

The Steps:

Step 1:  I chose a digital designer paper from a shop on Etsy called “The Digi Rainbow” that’s called 100 Number Digital Papers.  Yes, there are 100 different colors of this same paper that’s included in the Sale price of $1.40 for all of the colors!  What?  I used this blue one for the front, the inside left, and the back of the card.

Step 2:  I stenciled some clouds on the right inside as well as some die cut clouds from a set that has been discontinued.

Step 3:  I stamped and colored with Copic Markers this stamp from Art Impressions:

Art Impressions

Once colored, I fussy cut the “couple flying in the plane” to spin up on the square when the card is opened.

Step 4:  On my computer I created the two sentiments that is a quote from Abraham Lincoln! (“It’s not the years in your life, it’s the life in your years”)

Step 5:  The “Happy Birthday” sentiment on the front is: 783 – Happy Birthday

That’s it!

C4C – 452 Sketch Week!

Frog pull card front

I have an adorable granddaughter who is a September girl like me!  She’s is in high school now and is too grown-up to want kiddie cards but still likes interactive cards.

Here’s how I made this card:

I used a now retired die set from Karen Burniston when she was still with Elizabeth Craft Designs called 916 – Spiral Circle Pull Card.  It comes with a die that creates a spiral that extends when the card is opened. As most of Karen’s interactive dies sets, this one could be for any theme.  This die set looked as if it was made for this month’s sketch to me:

Spiral Circle pull die

The basket and all the flowers were made with this set from Joset for Elizabeth Craft Designs called: 1460 – Spring Basket

Spring basket die

Let’s just say I cut a lot of flowers.  I used pink, yellow and white cardstock and cut each flower with two layers of petals.  The flower center circle was cut with an olive green cardstock.  The bow from this set was cut with the same cardstock from Elizabeth Craft Designs called: Thinking About Grand Canyon that I used for the pull card.  I cut the basket from white cardstock and colored it with PanPastels.

The leafy branches was with Elizabeth Craft Designs:  1033 – Leafy Branch I cut about 6 branches and cut into pieces that worked for the basket of flowers.

2017-07-02 19.13.29

The frog was made with die set also expired from Karen Burniston called 909 – Hoppy the Frog:

2016-07-24 12.14.57

I cut two little circles out of white cardstock using Elizabeth Craft Designs: 1172 – Dotted Scallop Circles  I cut them using the 3rd to the smallest die in this set for under the frog and for the sentiment when you open the card.  I stamped the sentiment “Enjoy your day” from a retired Karen Burniston little stamp set called Just a Note on one of the circles for the inside sentiment.

The outside sentiment “Happy Birthday” is from this die set from Elizabeth Craft Designs: 783 – Happy Birthday

That’s It!

Thank you for taking a look and I hope you’ll join us this week and make your version of this sketch.
