A Butterfly Birthday Card

The Elizabeth Craft Designs 1477 – Butterfly Aperture is one of my new toys and available at Dies R Us.  I just love this set.  The Butterfly measures 5″ across the top of the wings!  This card is going to my granddaughter.

Let’s Make This Card

Step 1:  Cut the die from the Happy Frame XL out of deep lavender cardstock 4 times.  Then assemble the frame:

Step 2:  Cut three 6″ squares out of white cardstock and one 6.25″ square also out of white cardstock.

Step 3:  On the one white 6.25″ sq., make a background for the main event Butterfly!  I applied 3 or 4 complementary inks to a non-stick surface (craft sheet) and sprayed lightly with water.  You can blend some of the colors too.  There are no mistakes in this step.  Then just dap your white sq. in the ink using light touches.  Layer this step turning the paper until you like what you have and then you can let it air dry or dry with any dryer.

On the other three squares deliberately apply ink in stripes blending colors as you go.  I used small sponge daubers.  This photo is of the technique not the actual one I used.  The photo on the right shows the colors I actually used.:

Step 3:  Cut the silhouette pc. from one of the deliberately inked squares and cut two overlay pieces out of the other two deliberately inked squares.  I colored the little body die pcs. that fall out of the overlay pc. when you cut with a Copic marker and glued two together to make it a little more prominent.

Step 4:  Score the silhouette butterfly on the right side so the wings will slightly bend up.  Here’s a picture of the underside after I scored and bent it:

Step 5:  Glue one of the overlays to the right side of the above piece.  Then glue the other cut overlay on top but only under the body.

Step 6:  Apply 10mm Elizabeth Craft Designs Clear Double sided adhesive to all four sides of the randomly inked 6.25 square.  Remove the protective back and carefully attach the frame.  Now glue the completed butterfly to the background but only the body so the wings will be 3D.

Step 7:  Decorate the frame using the following die sets:

I added some jewel squares to the butterfly body and hanging hearts.

That’s it!
